Approach and anchoring

The western breakwater gives good shelter from north-west winds, but the outer harbour stays open to the south. The basin north of Whaler Island offers better holding for small craft. Battery Point Lighthouse, on a rocky islet at the harbour mouth, marks dangerous rocks to the north.

Practical

The Crescent City Harbor District inner basin lies 0.3 nautical miles north, with 240 slips from 30 to 70 feet and side-tie moorage for vessels up to 175 feet. The Port of Brookings Harbor is 18.8 nautical miles north, across the Oregon line.

History

Battery Point Lighthouse was first lit in 1856 on an islet linked to the shore at low water. It survived the tsunami of 27 March 1964, which followed the Alaska earthquake and destroyed twenty-nine blocks of the town.
