Approach and anchoring
Reached via the Canal latéral à la Garonne. The pont-canal d'Agen, a 23-arch aqueduct 539 m long, carries the canal over the Garonne immediately west of the basin. Standard canal gauge: draught 1.8 m, air draught 3.4 m. Lock 39 Agen is on the west side of the town.
Practical
Halte nautique managed by the city with mooring rings, water and electricity bornes. Capitainerie with sanitary block. No fuel berth on the canal, road station in town. All shops, supermarkets and SNCF station in Agen within 1 km.
Ashore
Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Agen, 16th-century town houses, 700 m from the basin. Cathédrale Saint-Caprais, Romanesque and Gothic, listed UNESCO as part of the pilgrim routes of Santiago de Compostela, 600 m. Prunes d'Agen are the famous local speciality, several producers and a dedicated shop. V80 Canal des Deux Mers à vélo passes along the towpath.
History
The Canal latéral à la Garonne was built between 1838 and 1856 as the western extension of the Canal du Midi, completing the Canal des Deux Mers from Bordeaux to Sète. The pont-canal d'Agen was inaugurated in 1843 and is the second longest canal aqueduct in France.
