City marina on the Apalachicola River in the Florida Panhandle, off Gulf Intracoastal Waterway mile 355.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from Apalachicola Bay near GIWW mile 355. Pick up green can 1 and flashing red 2 at the start of the marked approach channel, then head up the river entrance. A 65 ft fixed bridge crosses the river just above the marina.
Practical
Transient and long-term dockage, with shore power and fresh water on the pontoons. Fuel available. Two more marinas within 0.3 nm on Scipio Creek to the north-west, useful as fallback berths.
Ashore
The historic district covers more than 900 listed buildings and sits within a few hundred metres of the docks. The Sponge Exchange of 1840 still stands in the downtown. Shops, restaurants and provisioning are all within walking distance.
History
Founded around 1820 as West Point and renamed Apalachicola in 1831, the town shipped cotton until the Civil War blockade. Oysters were sold from here as early as 1836, and a sponge fleet of 16 boats worked out of the port by 1895.
