Alexandria Bay Town Dock
- Type
- Harbour
Municipal transient dock on the St Lawrence River at Alexandria Bay, in the heart of the Thousand Islands of upstate New York.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the main channel of the St Lawrence Seaway, keeping clear of commercial shipping which has right of way. Current runs 1 to 3 knots downstream depending on lake levels and dam releases at Massena. The Upper and Lower James Street docks lie on the north shore of the village, just west of Heart Island and Boldt Castle.
Practical
Daytime tie-up from 08:00 to 21:00 limited to four hours for $5. Overnight rate $2 per foot. First-come, first-served, no reservations. Horizon Marina at the Thousand Islands Club is the closest full-service alternative for fuel and longer stays.
Ashore
Village restaurants, bars and shops line James Street within 100 m of the dock. Uncle Sam Boat Tours runs scheduled trips from the adjacent quay to Boldt Castle on Heart Island, Singer Castle and Millionaire's Row. The Antique Boat Museum at Clayton lies 11 NM upriver.
History
Alexandria Bay grew in the late nineteenth century as a Gilded Age resort for New York and Philadelphia industrialists, who built mansions on the islands. George C. Boldt began Boldt Castle on Heart Island in 1900 for his wife Louise, but work stopped when she died in 1904 and the 120-room shell stood abandoned for 73 years before restoration began.
