Anchorage in the South Arm of Uganik Bay, a fjord on the north coast of Kodiak Island, Alaska, off Shelikof Strait.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Uganik Bay opens off Shelikof Strait and runs about 11 miles south-southeast into Kodiak Island before dividing into Northeast Arm, East Arm and South Arm. The approach is unmarked. Make for the head of the South Arm and anchor over sand and rock. Larsen Harbor lies 29 miles to the south-west.
Practical
No facilities. Sheltered from winds between north-west and south-west; exposed from the east. Holding is mixed on a sand and rock bottom, so set the anchor with care and allow scope for williwaws funnelling off the surrounding hills.
Ashore
The bay sits within Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, which covers most of Kodiak Island. The shoreline is brown bear country, and the surrounding slopes carry stands of Sitka spruce. The disused Port O'Brien cannery, built in 1926, stands in the Northeast Arm.
