Anchorage in the Alligator River on the North Carolina Intracoastal Waterway, near ICW mile 104. Soft mud bottom.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Leave the ICW between markers G49 and R52 at about mile 104.2. The entrance is narrow but opens into a wide pool with 7 to 11 feet of water. Anchor in 10 to 11 feet over soft mud. Shelter is good from all quarters except the east, where a 4 mile fetch builds a chop.

Ashore

There are no facilities. Shore access is at the Gum Ridge boat ramp, about 2 miles further west off the river. The nearest fuel and supplies are at Alligator River Marina, 14.4 miles north.

Story

The Alligator River flows into Albemarle Sound and runs through one of the largest black bear populations in the eastern United States, alongside the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.
