North Carolina sounds: Dismal Swamp, Albemarle and Roanoke Island

15 places · Carolinas and Georgia

Behind the Outer Banks, inland seas with no lunar tide, where the wind alone raises or drops the water, sometimes by three feet in a day. The way in is the Dismal Swamp Canal, six feet of water and two locks that open at set times four times a day, down to Elizabeth City and its free 48 hour docks. Edenton and Albemarle Plantation on the north shore, Manteo and Wanchese on Roanoke Island, then the Alligator River, the 21 mile canal to the Pungo, lined with stumps, and Belhaven behind its breakwater. On Albemarle Sound, 12 to 15 knots already builds a three foot chop.
