Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access from the canal only. Locks operated by Voies Navigables de France, standard opening hours in season. Air draught limited by canal bridges on the route.
Practical
Town shops and bakeries within 300 m, a supermarket about 20 minutes on foot and the town centre 15 minutes away. Berths fill with reserved hotel-boat and rental places; the wooden pontoons carry water and power but are often held by residents, and some bollards further from town may be free with services uncertain. The harbour office does not always answer. Port de Briare 0.4 nm N, reported at only 1.2 m draught; Châtillon-sur-Loire 2.5 nm S.
Ashore
Pont-canal de Briare spans the Loire 700 m from the quay. Designed by Léonce-Abel Mazoyer and built with Eiffel for the metal structure, inaugurated in 1896, it was the longest canal bridge in the world until 2003 at 662 m. Musée des Deux Marines et du Pont-Canal in town covers canal history.
History
The Canal de Briare, opened in 1642 under Henri IV and Sully, was the first summit-level canal built in Europe and linked the Loire to the Seine basin.
