Guide
Approach and anchoring
Anchor towards the north-west corner of the bay in about 20 feet over hard sand. Holding is good and the bay is well sheltered from the prevailing north-west wind and swell, though it can roll when conditions back to the west. Do not use this anchorage with any wind or swell from the south. For cruisers heading north it is almost the only shelter between Morro Bay and Monterey.
Ashore
San Simeon pier sits inside the bay, with a beach landing for tenders. Hearst Castle, the Hearst estate above Highway 1, runs guided tours and is reached by shuttle. Morro Bay, with the nearest full marine services, lies 23.5 nm to the south-east.
