Anchorage under the walls of Old San Juan, off the Puerta de San Juan, the last surviving gate in the city walls, just inside the entrance to San Juan Bay.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Mud bottom. Sheltered from N through E to SE, open to the south and west across the bay. Keep clear of the main shipping channel and the cruise ship berths.
Practical
No facilities at the anchorage. Fuel, water and showers at the Miramar marinas on the San Antonio Channel, about 2 NM east. San Juan is a port of entry.
Ashore
Castillo San Felipe del Morro, begun in 1539, guards the bay entrance. With the city walls, San Cristóbal and La Fortaleza it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, and the forts are run by the US National Park Service as the San Juan National Historic Site.
History
In 1595 Francis Drake attacked San Juan by sea and failed. In 1598 the Earl of Cumberland took El Morro by land, the only time it fell in battle, and in 1625 a Dutch fleet burned the city while the fort held out.
