Tidal marina on the east coast of the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy, behind the fortified island of Tatihou.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east through a buoyed channel between the Île de Tatihou and the Fort de la Hougue. Sill gate opens roughly HW plus or minus 2 h 30. Strong tidal streams in the Race of Barfleur to the north. VHF 9. Shelter is total once inside the lock.
Practical
750 berths, max draught 2.3 m inside the wet basin. Fuel berth with diesel near the lock. Water, electricity, showers, travel lift and boatyard on site. When the gate is shut there is nowhere to lie alongside, so wait on the outer anchorage zone marked on the chart; a boat on the 2.3 m limit should take the first visitor pontoon, which holds a little more water at low water. E-bike rental and a well-stocked Uship chandlery. Fishmongers and oyster sellers along the quay, with fishermen selling scallops in season. Bakery, Carrefour supermarket and chandler within 300 m.
Ashore
Île de Tatihou accessible at low water on foot or by amphibious vessel from the quay, with a maritime museum and a Vauban tower; the amphibious ticket books up in season, so reserve ahead. The century-old family grocer Épicerie Gosselin has the Boulay butcher opposite, and a market runs on Saturdays. Coastal path GR223 north to Barfleur, 12 km. Oyster beds visible at low water between the port and Tatihou, Saint-Vaast is the leading oyster producer on the Normandy coast.
History
Site of the naval battle of La Hougue in June 1692 where the Anglo-Dutch fleet destroyed 12 French ships of the line at anchor. The Vauban towers of La Hougue and Tatihou, built 1694, are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2008.
