Marina of 1200 berths in the bay of Saint-Servan, on the south side of Saint-Malo opposite the walled city.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Rance estuary after clearing the Môle des Noires. The entry channel is marked by red and green buoys, with a sill retaining water at chart datum plus 2 metres and a gauge showing the depth over it. Strong tidal streams run past the pontoon ends, up to 4 knots at springs, so use long lines. The visitor berths at the ends of A and B pontoons take the westerly swell and are uncomfortable in W to NW winds, so ask for a berth further in. Max draught 2 metres. VHF channel 9.
Practical
1200 berths, about 60 for visitors. Water and electricity on all pontoons, fuel berth with diesel and petrol, laundry and shipyard with a 30 tonne travel lift. There is no berthing assistance, and a QR code emailed on booking opens the gates and showers, with a newer sanitary block near the roundabout end. Bread can be ordered at the office. Clear customs at the ferry terminal police post, the yellow building left of the vehicle booths, open 0800 to 1200 and 1400 to 1800. Saint-Servan shops 400 metres, Intra-Muros 25 minutes on foot.
Ashore
Tour Solidor, a 14th century keep housing the Cap-Horniers museum, is 400 metres from the pontoons, with small restaurants and creperies overlooking the bay beside it. The GR34 coastal path runs along the Aleth corniche to the Grand Bé islet, burial place of Chateaubriand, reached on foot at low water. Intra-Muros walled city is 2 km north on foot.
History
The marina was built in 1983 in the former tidal basin of Saint-Servan, a separate commune until its merger with Saint-Malo in 1967. Saint-Servan itself occupies the site of Aleth, the Gallo-Roman capital of the Coriosolites tribe.
Story
Tidal range in the bay reaches 13 m at spring tides, one of the largest in Europe, which is why the marina needed a retaining sill to remain afloat.
