Marina of 81 berths in the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Ciboure, on the Basque coast, sheltered behind the three breakwaters of the bay.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter the bay between the Sainte-Barbe digue to the north-east and the Socoa digue to the west, with the central Artha breakwater ahead. Follow the buoyed channel to the Ciboure side of the Nivelle estuary; the narrow entrance lets some swell into the marina. Visitor berths are the outer ends of the first two pontoons, marked passage, lying stern-to with a lazy line to pick up for the bow. Little current inside the basin, though the entrance channel can run. Maximum draught 2.4 m. VHF 9.
Practical
81 berths with water and electricity. Visitor places are few, so call the harbour office on the Ciboure quay ahead to reserve, or take a buoy in the bay if none is free. Spotless showers with temperature control. Fuel at the nearby Socoa fuel berth. Shops and restaurants in Ciboure within 300 m, with a bakery closed on Mondays and a Vival grocery that runs dear.
Ashore
Composer Maurice Ravel was born on the Ciboure quay in 1875, the house still stands at 27 quai Maurice Ravel, 200 m from the marina. Fort de Socoa, a 17th century Vauban-era fort, sits on the opposite side of the bay 1 km west. Saint-Jean-de-Luz town centre and the church where Louis XIV married in 1660 are 700 m across the estuary bridge.
