Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the NE along the bay of La Fresnaye. Entry channel dredged to the marina, with red and green beacons and leading lights on bearing 205. The Les Bourdinots cardinal mark, about 0.4 NM NE of the breakwater, must be left to seaward. Access is possible at all states of the tide, but the entrance can be rough in fresh northerly winds and swell, easing two to three miles offshore. Max draught 2.25 m at the visitor pontoons. VHF channel 9.

Practical

1005 berths, about 80 for visitors on pontoon D near the shore; in high season the overflow goes to the outer breakwater pontoon, where wash from passing motorboats is felt. A harbour rib meets arrivals at the entrance and leads them to a berth, taking lines. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Showers are solar heated and can run cold on busy mornings. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol open in season, diesel around 1.80 euros a litre in 2024. Reckon on about 32 euros a night for a 12 m boat. Out of hours the gate and facility codes are posted on the board at the foot of the ramp. Bakery and supermarket within 900 m in the town of Saint-Cast.

Ashore

GR34 coastal path passes the marina and reaches Pointe de Saint-Cast in 1.5 km. In town, L'Entrepot is a 15-minute walk away, and there is a fish shop up the hill. Plage de Pen-Guen, 2 km south, has 3 km of sand. Cap Frehel lighthouse and Fort la Latte lie 8 km west by road.

History

The breakwater and marina were inaugurated in 2009, funded by the Département des Côtes-d'Armor. Before that, Saint-Cast had only a drying harbour used by the fishing fleet for scallop dredging in the bay of Saint-Brieuc.

Story

The bay of Saint-Cast is one of the main scallop grounds in France, with the fishery limited to 45 minutes per boat per day in season to protect the stock.
