Guide
Approach and anchoring
A tight, shallow anchorage where the anchor sets in thin mud over lava, so holding is poor and dragging is common. The bay is bounded on one side by an active inter-island commercial channel. Hilo Harbour breakwater shelters the water from ocean swell.
Practical
The Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation lists 25 moorings in the bay. Crews call Reed's Bay Cruisers on VHF for an informal ride ashore to Reeds Bay Beach Park.
