Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter Hilo Bay round the eastern end of the breakwater. Holding in the bay is mixed, with hardpan and rock in places and patches of mud near the breakwater that hold better. The bay is exposed to the trade winds, which often reinforce in the afternoon as a sea breeze builds over the land.
Practical
Fresh water is available locally. Radio Bay, the manmade basin in the corner of the port that long served transient cruisers, has been closed to visiting boats since April 2020, so check the current status before relying on it.
Ashore
Hilo town fronts the bay with shops, provisions and the Saturday farmers market. Reeds Bay and the Wailoa River small-boat areas lie at the western side of the bay.
