Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the N or NE, keeping clear of the Rochers de Cancale to the W. Sand bottom. Pick up a visitor buoy after calling the harbourmaster on VHF 9; the visitor buoys are the outermost ones and sit in the tidal stream. Exposed to E winds and to the strong streams running along the Pointe du Grouin, it can roll heavily at night around high water on a strong coefficient.
Practical
About 20 mooring buoys on sand, around 27 euros a night with the shore shuttle included. No services on the water. Protection from S, SW, W and NW. Nearest refuges: Port Picain 0.4 NM SW and Port de Cancale 1.4 NM S.
Ashore
Sand beach of Port-Mer directly ashore with beach bars in season. Sentier des douaniers GR34 passes above the beach and leads to the Pointe du Grouin lighthouse at about 1.2 km, overlooking the Chausey islands. Cancale village and oyster market 1.4 km by road.
History
The Pointe du Grouin served as a departure point for the Newfoundland cod-fishing fleet based in Cancale from the 16th century onwards.
