Approach and anchoring

Accessed from the canalised Escaut between the locks of Folien and Trith-Saint-Léger. VHF channel 22, no tidal constraint. The entrance shoals and needs care: the western side dries out, so favour the eastern side, to starboard on the way in, where boats have carried through with very little under the keel before the depth opens to 2 to 3 metres inside. Draught over about 1.7 metres can touch at the entrance even though the basin itself takes 1.9 metres.

Practical

Fifty berths along pontoons, about 12 euros a night for a 10 metre boat, with water and electricity charged separately. Fuel station and toilets on site. Valenciennes town centre is within walking distance for groceries and restaurants.

Ashore

Musée des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes about 1.5 km from the port, with paintings by Watteau and Carpeaux, both born in the town. Place d'Armes and covered market 1.2 km. The Parc de la Rhônelle runs along the river east of the centre.
