Guide
Approach and anchoring
Anchoring is banned in the reserve. Book a buoy online with the reserve managers, the Ti Tè association and the ONF, on reservesdesiradepetiteterre.com: 9 white buoys for boats up to 10 tonnes and one white buoy with a blue band for 30 tonnes. The pass into the lagoon is difficult in a northerly swell. Speed in the lagoon is limited to 3 knots.
Practical
Fee of 20 euros per boat per day plus 2.50 euros per person, booked by slot: 9am to 4pm, 4pm to 9am, or 24 hours. Check the mooring before relying on it, as the current can be strong. Tenders land only at the coconut grove on Terre-de-Bas. No discharge of any kind, no jet skis, water skiing or kitesurfing, no camping ashore, and skippered charters are banned. Phone +590 690 50 35 63.
Ashore
A 0.9 km loop trail from the beach passes the lighthouse and returns along the lagoon. The reserve holds about 9,500 Lesser Antillean iguanas. Nurse and lemon sharks, southern stingrays and spotted eagle rays are seen in the lagoon, and turtles nest on the beaches.
History
Amerindian sites on Terre-de-Bas date from 600 to 1500 AD. Cotton planters settled in the 18th century, and the 1858 census counted 28 people. The lighthouse, the first in Guadeloupe, was lit in 1840 and kept by keepers until 1972, when it was automated and the islets were left uninhabited. The reserve was created in 1998.
