Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter from the north between La Tataquet rock to the west and Le Tunard rock to the east, both marked, into 4 to 5 m at low water. Holding on sand and rock. The bay shelters from W through N to NW but rolls heavily when swell or a NE wind sets against the tide, at times untenable overnight. A useful place to wait for slack in the Alderney Race offshore, which runs up to 8 knots at springs, planning the passage with slack water at Cap de la Hague.
Practical
60 free white visitor buoys laid by the Communauté d'agglomération du Cotentin for the summer season, the inner ones lying quieter. The buoys are large and metal, and in slack wind against tide a boat can end up lying against its buoy and banging the hull, so fender well. No water or power. Small slip and dinghy landing at the village.
Ashore
Two restaurants face the moorings, best booked ahead, and fresh crab and fish are sold on the quay straight off the boats. A small grocery in the centre covers the basics, anything more about 5 km off. Village church of Saint-Martin from the 13th century. Maison Jacques Prévert in the hamlet of Le Val at 2 km, where the poet lived from 1971 until his death in 1977. GR 223 sentier des douaniers passes through the village.
History
The bay served as a coaster refuge on the Cherbourg to Cap de la Hague route for centuries. A submarine telegraph cable to the Channel Islands came ashore here in the 19th century.
