Anchorage off Olowalu on the west coast of Maui, Hawaii, about 4 nm south of Lahaina. Sand and rock bottom, sheltered from NW through E.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from offshore along the West Maui shoreline. The water shoals well out from the beach over the reef, so anchor in sand clear of coral heads and sound your way in. The anchorage gives a lee from the prevailing trade winds but lies open to the south and the kona swell.
Practical
No facilities at the anchorage. Lahaina Harbor, 4.1 nm to the north-west, is the nearest harbour for fuel and provisions.
Ashore
Olowalu Reef stretches along the coast here, a wide shallow coral system used for snorkelling, with Hawaiian green sea turtles regularly seen on the inshore flats.
