- Harbour
Small-boat harbour on the west coast of Maui, Hawaii, sheltered behind a breakwater facing the Auau Channel between Maui and Lanai.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Auau Channel, with the harbour entrance marked by red and green lights at the breakwater. Trade winds funnel along the West Maui mountains, generating afternoon chop in the channel. No overnight transient berthing currently available.
Practical
Operated by the Hawaii Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation. Following the August 2023 Lahaina fire, the harbour is in phased reopening: limited daytime commercial operations from 08:00 to 18:00, mainly for tour boats. Full facilities and slips for cruisers are not yet restored.
Ashore
Front Street and most of historic Lahaina town remain closed after the fire, including the Banyan Tree square. Whale watching from the harbour is active in the December to April humpback season in the Auau Channel.
History
Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845 and the centre of the Pacific whaling trade from the 1820s to the 1860s. The August 2023 wildfire destroyed most of the town and damaged the harbour. The Carthaginian II whaling brig replica, sunk as an artificial reef off the harbour in 2005, is still a dive site.
