Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south, clear of the rocks of Les Chats to the east and the Pointe de la Croix to the west. Open to any easterly or southerly, best in settled N or W weather, though a westerly swell wraps around the rocks and can roll the anchorage even in light winds. Room is tight and the anchor drags on the surrounding weed and rock, so aim for the sand pocket to the left of the entrance channel. Depth there is about 3 metres at low water, and the spot suits shallow draught.
Practical
Eight mooring buoys managed by a local association, for boats under 8 metres, with those nearest the beach reserved; a charge applies in season. Contact +33 6 27 75 86 60. No services on the water. Locmaria village has a bar and a crêperie within walking distance, but provisioning and water are at Port-Tudy, 1.2 NM to the north across the island.
Ashore
Plage des Grands Sables, the only convex beach in Europe, lies 2 km to the east along the coastal path. Écomusée de Groix in Port-Tudy covers the tuna fishing heritage of the island. GR 34 coastal trail circles the island over about 25 km.
History
Locmaria was the second fishing harbour of Groix until the early 20th century, used mainly by small craft working close inshore. The village church dates from the 17th century and stands above the anchorage.
