Tidal harbour at the western tip of Finistère, facing the Chenal du Four and the islands of Ouessant and Molène.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Chenal du Four between the Grande Vinotière and the Île de Béniguet. The entrance faces SW, sheltered by the Pointe de Kermorvan, but the harbour is sensitive to westerly swell. Tidal streams in the Four run up to 5 knots at springs. The inner harbour dries. Visitor buoys marked V1, V2 and so on lie over rock in shallow water and suit only draughts under 1 metre, while the buoy marked A1 sits opposite. The old ferry pier just inside the entrance dries and cannot be used near low water. Maximum draught 1.8 m at the outer pontoons. VHF channel 9.
Practical
350 moorings and a small visitor pontoon on the north side, with visitor buoys off the entrance that stay accessible at any state of tide, around 20 euros a night. Water and electricity on the main pontoon. WC, showers and capitainerie at the quai du Drellac'h. Bakery, butcher and a Spar in the village, 300 m from the harbour. Fuel by jerrycan from the station in the village. This remains a working fishing port, so expect noise from the fleet and the Ouessant ferry.
Ashore
The GR 34 coastal path runs from the port to Pointe Saint-Mathieu, 5 km south, where a lighthouse and abbey ruins stand on cliffs. A market is held in the village on Tuesday mornings, and the restaurant la Passerelle stands by the harbour. Ferry terminal to Ouessant and Molène at the quai Sainte-Barbe, Penn-ar-Bed company. Plage des Blancs Sablons 1.5 km north, sand beach backed by dunes.
