Small Alutiiq village on a side arm of Uyak Bay, on the west coast of Kodiak Island, about 60 miles south-west of the city of Kodiak.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter Uyak Bay from Shelikof Strait, then bear east into Larsen Bay for around 6 miles to the sand spit that almost closes the inlet. Breakwater and boat harbour completed in 2002. VHF 69 monitored locally. No road access to Kodiak, only floatplane or boat.
Practical
Public dock with limited transient room. Marine diesel, petrol and propane available in the village. Basic provisions at the local store. The Larsen Bay Lodge handles most visiting sport boats.
History
The cannery was built in 1888 by the Arctic Packing Company and shifted in 1911 to the sand spit to escape the Shelikof westerlies. The Alutiiq name of the village is Uyaksaq, and the area has been seasonally occupied for at least 2,000 years, with hundreds of archaeological finds documented.
