Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access from the north entrance to the Glénan, leaving the Île de la Pie to starboard. The 32 mooring buoys sit in a tight grid limited to about 13 m, with room to anchor on sand between the buoys and the beach; out of season the buoys are lifted, leaving mooring chains on the bottom of the inner pool that readily foul an anchor. Open and exposed from W round to SE, so suitable only in settled weather or N to NE winds, with swell working in at high water whatever the wind. VHF channel 6 for the Glénan moorings.
Practical
32 visitor buoys on sand, around 15 to 20 euros a night, cash only, the warden coming round about 09:00 to collect. No water or services on the island. Nearest shelter is Port Glénan 0.4 NM to the SW, Port de Trévignon 7.1 NM to the NE on the mainland.
Ashore
The Glénan archipelago is a Natura 2000 site and hosts the Centre nautique des Glénan, one of the largest sailing schools in Europe, founded in 1947. Les Viviers on the island serves lobster and takes bookings a few days ahead. Dinghy landing on Île Saint-Nicolas is best before 10:00 or after 19:00 in season, between the ferry crowds. Clear turquoise water over the sandbank between the islands, with landing on protected islets regulated during the seabird breeding season.
