Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south through the Petite Passe between Giens and Porquerolles. Sand bottom in 3 to 7 metres, good holding even in a strong mistral. Shelter from SW, W and NW; exposed to easterlies, which bring swell in. By day, tow-boats and water-ski and kite schools raise a constant wake and their safety craft run the buoy line as a lane, so anchor clear of it. Some crews have fouled old chain and debris near the anchorage mark.

Practical

Forain anchorage. Landing a powered dinghy on the beach is not allowed, only under oars, so most crews leave the tender free at the small Port de La Capte 0.9 NM north, which also has water, basic provisioning and a Friday market of regional produce. Port Auguier 1.5 NM south on Giens for a full marina call.

Ashore

Salt marsh and flamingo lagoon of the Vieux Salins d'Hyères 1 km inland, managed by the Conservatoire du Littoral. Sentier du littoral along the east coast of Giens to La Capte beach. A beach bar plays music well past midnight in summer, so crews after a quiet night anchor well away from it.
