Approach and anchoring

Open roadstead on the bay of the Seine, drying out to sand offshore. The roadstead holds on sand in about 5 m and is tenable only in settled weather or an offshore wind. Strong tidal range and streams. Entry to Courseulles harbour is tide-bound, lock at the inner basin. VHF 9 for the harbour.

Practical

Forain anchorage on sand. No services. Port of Courseulles-sur-Mer lies 0.4 NM to the SW for all services. Ouistreham lock and marina 8.8 NM to the SE, access to the Caen canal.

Ashore

Juno Beach Centre museum on the seafront, dedicated to the Canadian landings of 6 June 1944. Market on Tuesday and Friday mornings in the town centre. Oyster farms at the river mouth, Courseulles oysters have been farmed here since the 18th century.

History

Courseulles-sur-Mer was the main landing beach of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division on D-Day, 6 June 1944. The Cross of Lorraine on the seafront marks the return of General de Gaulle to French soil on 14 June 1944.
