Guide

Approach and anchoring

Shallow-water approach through the mangrove channels north of the Sugarloaf and Saddlebunch Keys. Depths drop fast onto sand and grass flats, so work the rising tide and keep a sharp lookout for the shoals on either side of the channel.

Ashore

The whole of Johnston Key sits within the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, a closed island reserved for nesting birds. Sugarloaf Marina, with fuel and a ramp, lies 4.7 miles south.
