Guide
Approach and anchoring
Very easy approach. Sheltered from north round to east. Anchor in 7 to 10 metres if no buoy is free: the depth drops off quickly. Mooring office on VHF 8.
Practical
10 paying buoys on a sand bottom. Small black sand beach, no shops or services on the islet. Customs clearance at Les Saintes Multiservices, 3 rue Jean Calot in Terre-de-Haut, Monday to Saturday 9am to noon and 2pm to 7pm, phone +590 590 81 53 57.
Ashore
Paths lead into the woods behind the beach. The remains of Fort Joséphine stand on the Morne Joséphine, 90 metres up, facing Fort Napoléon on Terre-de-Haut.
History
France built the fort here in 1777 as Fort de la Reine. It became a penitentiary in 1851, was damaged by the hurricane of 6 September 1865, and in 1871 the islet became a quarantine station.
