Guide

Approach and anchoring

Access via the canal lateral a l'Oise, VNF Freycinet gauge. Lock PK handled by VNF personnel during canal opening hours. No tide, no current. Air draught limited by the canal bridges to around 3,50 m.

Practical

A short quay for three to four boats up to 25 m, the typical Freycinet peniche format. In practice it is a bare quay with picnic tables, bins and a bottle bank, and no water, power, fuel or sanitary block. Free of charge, short stay only. Nearest shops in Chauny, 9 km by road to the north.

Ashore

EuroVelo 3 Scandibérique cycle route passes along the canal, linking Chauny and Soissons. Abbaye de Premontre, mother house of the Premonstratensian order founded in 1120 by Norbert of Xanten, at 15 km east by road. Forest of Saint-Gobain, a 6000 hectare oak and beech massif classified as a forêt d'exception, starts 3 km south.

History

The canal lateral a l'Oise was opened in 1839 to bypass the less navigable sections of the lower Oise river, part of the network that linked the coalfields of the Nord to Paris. Guny itself is a small village of about 400 inhabitants whose church dates from the 12th century, rebuilt after heavy damage in 1917 during the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg line.
