Approach and anchoring
Entrance via a buoyed channel across drying sandbanks. Access limited to roughly HW +/- 2h30, when the lock gate opens into the wet basin, which keeps about 2.5 m alongside, the gate closes from around LW -2h30 to LW +2h30. On the way in, watch a drying beaching grid marked by a rusty pile that cuts the depth on the starboard side. Prudence with NW swell at the entrance. Fishing boats work in and out whenever the gate is open, including at night, so expect noise and movement. VHF 9 for the harbour office.
Practical
280 berths in the wet basin, around 35 euros a night for a 10 m boat, on the dear side for what is offered. Water, electricity, showers and toilets, dated but clean and with plenty of hot water. There is no fuel pump in the port, diesel comes from the supermarket filling station a few minutes away. Fishing fleet share the outer quays, with morning scallop and whelk landings. Bakery, butcher and supermarket within 400 m.
Ashore
Ranger Museum on Quai Crampon, dedicated to the 2nd US Ranger Battalion that scaled the cliffs of the Pointe du Hoc on 6 June 1944. Pointe du Hoc battle site and preserved bunkers 6 km to the east. Omaha Beach at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer 9 km east.
History
The port was used on D-Day as a supply point for the US forces landing at Omaha and Utah beaches, once the German battery on the Pointe du Hoc had been neutralised by the Rangers.
