Anchorage on the western bank of the Hudson River off Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, at the foot of Storm King Mountain, on a mud bottom that gives good holding.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The anchorage lies about 5 miles north of West Point and 5 miles south of the Newburgh waterfront, on a deep and unobstructed reach of the river. It is sheltered from the western quarter and open to the north and east. The Hudson runs a noticeable current here, so allow for it when setting the anchor and check the swing. Cornwall Yacht Club lies 0.3 miles to the south-east with shore power, water and a pump-out berth.
Ashore
Storm King Mountain rises straight above the anchorage, with marked walking trails climbing from the river road. Storm King Art Center, an open-air sculpture park, lies inland from the village. The Hudson Highlands either side of the river are protected state parkland.
History
The reach below Storm King Mountain was the subject of a long planning dispute from 1963 over a proposed power plant on the mountainside. The case ended with the project abandoned and is widely credited with shaping United States environmental law.
