Guide
Approach and anchoring
Sand and weed bottom. Sheltered from NW through N to E, open to the south. Naguabo is 2.3 NM to the north-east.
Practical
Anchoring permitted around the island, but landing is forbidden: the cay is a University of Puerto Rico research station and only scientists go ashore. The macaques carry herpes B, which can be fatal to humans.
History
Primatologist Clarence Carpenter released around 450 rhesus macaques from India on the cay in 1938, with the support of Columbia University and the University of Puerto Rico School of Tropical Medicine.
