Rocky inlet on the south side of Île Pomègues in the Frioul archipelago off Marseille, inside the Calanques national park.

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the S on deep water, the entrance is clear between the cliff walls. Anchor on a mixed bottom of sand and rock in about 10 metres in the middle of the cove, looking for sandy pockets, or use the ecological mooring buoys installed by the national park where available. The inlet narrows towards its head, so keep off the sides when edging in. Sheltered from N, NE, W and NW winds, open to the S and exposed to any southerly swell.

Practical

No services in the calanque itself. Frioul harbour 1.2 nm NE has water, diesel, WC and a summer shuttle to Marseille Vieux-Port.

Ashore

Footpaths cross Pomègues from the calanque up to the old Caroline hospital ruins and down to Port-Frioul. Landing by tender is allowed outside seabird nesting closures signed by the park.

History

Pomègues and Ratonneau were used as quarantine islands from the 17th century, and the Hôpital Caroline on the adjacent island was built in the 1820s to isolate yellow fever cases.
