Guide

Approach and anchoring

Enter the Gulf of Morbihan through the Port-Navalo narrows, watching tidal streams that reach 8 knots at springs. Once past Île-aux-Moines, head south of Île-d'Arz. Anchoring is regulated by the commune of Île-d'Arz, and the pass in through the oyster beds is poorly marked, so feel the way in on the sounder. Shelter from NW, W and SW winds, exposed to easterlies. Holding is variable on weed, back the anchor to check it is set in sand. Shallow-draught boats and multihulls can take the ground on gravel at the beach or in the cove.

Practical

Arz village and pontoon 1.1 NM N for bread, small grocery and café. Cale du Beluré landing 2.1 NM N. Vannes and Arradon further west for full provisions and repairs.

Ashore

Chapelle Notre-Dame at the head of the bay gives the anchorage its name. Coastal footpath tours the full 17 km perimeter of Île-d'Arz. Moulin à marée de Berno on the south-west coast, restored tide mill built in 1638. Ferry link to Vannes and Conleau from Beluré pier.

History

Île-d'Arz was a monastic dependency of the Abbey of Redon from the 9th century. The island's captains supplied officers to the French merchant navy throughout the 19th century, commemorated by a stele on the path above the chapel.
