Guide

Approach and anchoring

Up the Auray river from Port-Navalo, about 6 NM of winding channel marked by lateral buoys. Tidal streams up to 4 knots in the narrows of Le Rocher. VHF 9 for the syndicate office. Confluence with the Bono river 0.5 NM below the Kerisper suspension bridge, air draught 25 m. The moorings form an organised field, so pick up a buoy rather than anchor. Free anchoring is possible only upstream at the north end beyond the last buoys.

Practical

Sand bottom, protection nearly all round except along the SW fetch of the main channel. A buoy runs about 16 euros for a 10 m boat, booked with the office on VHF 9. Land by tender at Le Bono village 0.7 NM NE, easier near high water as the foreshore is mud at low water, then a short walk in for the bakery, butcher and the local-produce shop Les producteurs du coin. Sanitary facilities are small but clean, with a code for the bin store from the harbour master. Water point at Saint-Goustan quay 1.5 NM upstream.

Ashore

Saint-Goustan old port of Auray at 1.5 NM, a medieval quarter with 15th century timber houses and the stone bridge from 1295. Benjamin Franklin landed there in 1776 on his way to negotiate with Louis XVI. Chapel of Notre-Dame de Béquerel on the Bono side at 1 km from the village. The footpath up to Le Bono passes a Neolithic tumulus said to be around 7000 years old.

History

The Bono river was a site of small coastal shipbuilding until the 1950s and of scallop dredging tchalupas, lug-rigged sloops still sailed today by the local heritage association.
