Sand anchorage in the Gironde estuary near the Pointe de Grave, close to the northern tip of the Médoc peninsula.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Tidal estuary with currents up to 3 knots on springs, so work the anchorage around low water and keep clear of the Banc de Trompeloup. It is a shallow bank, entered from the north of the bar off Royan into the pool that forms at low tide, with about 1 to 1.5 metres near the edge where deeper boats take the ground. It suits shoal draught in fair weather and is no refuge. Shelter from W, SW, S and SE, open to N and E. The sand shifts, so the charted depths are unreliable.
Practical
Port Bloc 4.1 NM to the SE at Le Verdon-sur-Mer, gateway marina for the Royan ferry, water and fuel. Port Médoc 4.5 NM SE with 800 berths, full services and a boatyard.
Ashore
Phare de Cordouan visible offshore to the NW, France's oldest working lighthouse and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021. Pointe de Grave beach and dune trails within walking distance. Royan reachable by passenger ferry from Le Verdon. The nearby Île sans nom gives a clear view across to Cordouan.
