Marina at Le Verdon-sur-Mer on the left bank of the Gironde estuary mouth, 950 berths, max draught 3 m, VHF 9.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the estuary via the Passe de Grave, following the buoyed channel between the Pointe de Grave and Royan. Strong tidal streams run in the estuary, up to 3 knots. Shallow-draught boats can enter at most states of tide, but the last 500 metres before the entrance shoal, so deeper boats should call the office before mid-tide to check depth against their draught. The entrance is narrow with a bend; keep clear of the Cordouan ferries. Estuary water is turbid, so trust the sounder. Call VHF 9 on approach.
Practical
950 pontoon berths, max length 25 m. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol open year-round. Water and electricity at every berth, showers, laundry, Wi-Fi. Travelift 50 tonnes, boatyard on site, with a Uship chandlery and a canvas maker among the harbour buildings. The sanitary facilities are dated, and shower access is by an app that is unreliable when the office is shut. La Boutika grocery behind the harbour office takes bread and croissant orders. Berthing runs about 32 to 35 euros a night for a boat of around 10 m.
Ashore
Pointe de Grave lighthouse and the Cordouan viewpoint at 1.5 km, with boat trips out to the Cordouan lighthouse running from the port. Beach of Saint-Nicolas at 1.2 km. Nearest supermarket about 2 km. Free ferry shuttle to Royan from Port Bloc at 600 m. The Vélodyssée cycle path runs past the marina, linking the Médoc vineyards southwards.
History
Le Verdon housed a major military and commercial port in the 20th century, with the deep-water terminal built in the 1930s for transatlantic liners before being repurposed for container traffic.
