Canal halt on the Canal du Nord at Allaines, commune of Nurlu in the Somme, about 4 km north of Péronne.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reach via the Canal du Nord, the freight waterway connecting the Oise at Pont-l'Évêque to the Dunkerque-Escaut link. Péronne port de plaisance and the private Péronne quay both lie 2,6 NM to the south. Freight traffic shares the waterway so keep VHF watch and follow lock schedules.
Practical
Moorings on the quay at Allaines, a disused freight pier that stays serviceable for an overnight halt. Village shops limited. Peronne 4 km south offers supermarkets, bakeries and a fuel station by road.
Ashore
Historial de la Grande Guerre museum in Péronne castle, 4 km south, dedicated to the 1914 to 1918 conflict on the Somme battlefield. Circuit of remembrance through Thiepval, Beaumont-Hamel and Pozières within 20 km by road.
History
The Canal du Nord was begun in 1908, interrupted by the First World War and finally opened in 1965. The line passes through the heart of the 1916 Battle of the Somme ground.
