Oregon coast and Columbia River: the bar harbours
14 lieux · Oregon and the Columbia River
Every harbour on the Oregon coast lies at a river mouth behind a bar, which the Coast Guard closes to recreational boats when it turns dangerous: a ROUGH BAR sign with flashing amber lights gives the warning at the entrance. Brookings, Bandon, Charleston in Coos Bay, Winchester Bay on the Umpqua, Newport on Yaquina Bay and Garibaldi in Tillamook Bay. To the north, the Columbia River bar, where the ebb runs 6 to 8 knots on its north side: Ilwaco, Warrenton and Astoria just inside, then Cathlamet, St. Helens and the Portland marinas, 90 miles from the sea. An 8 foot tide.
