Municipal marina on the Eureka waterfront in Humboldt Bay, north-west California, with the Wharfinger Building housing the marina office at the west end of the complex.

Approach and anchoring

Humboldt Bay is entered from the Pacific across the Humboldt Bar between the north and south jetties, a passage to be timed on slack water and avoided in heavy westerly swell. From the entrance the channel runs east-south-east some 4 NM to the Eureka waterfront. Channel and bar conditions are reported by the Coast Guard.

Practical

Around 150 berths from 20 to 70 feet, with shore power, fresh water, hot showers and laundry. Marina office in the Wharfinger Building at 1 Marina Way. Old Town shops, restaurants and a chandlery are within walking distance.

Ashore

Old Town Eureka begins one block from the marina, with the Carson Mansion at 143 M Street as the local landmark. Restaurants and galleries line 2nd and 3rd streets. The Madaket, the oldest continuously operating passenger vessel in the US, runs bay tours from the adjacent dock in season.

History

Eureka grew from 1850 as the shipping port for the Humboldt Bay redwood industry, and remained until the late twentieth century the largest deep-water port between San Francisco and Coos Bay. The Wharfinger Building, built in 1948, was the office of the harbour wharfinger who collected dock fees from the timber schooners.
