Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Meuse, which is canalised through the town. Passage via Lock 11 at Belleville upstream or Lock 12 at Baleycourt downstream. Air draught limited by road bridges, typical 3.5 m. Current moderate, increases after rainfall on the upper Meuse.
Practical
Mooring on the Quai de Londres in the town centre. Water and electricity on the pontoons, paid at the kiosk. No fuel berth. All shops, bakery, and supermarkets within 500 m.
Ashore
Citadelle souterraine de Verdun 900 m from the quay, underground galleries used as command post in 1916. Monument to the Victory and Soldiers of Verdun on the right bank, 300 m. Battlefield sites at Douaumont ossuary and Fort de Vaux, 7 to 9 km by road.
History
Verdun was the site of the longest battle of the First World War, from February to December 1916, with around 300 000 dead on both sides. The Treaty of Verdun in 843 divided Charlemagne's empire between his three grandsons.
