Approach and anchoring
Enter Thunder Bay from Lake Huron and head for the south shore of the bay. The marina is inside the bay, sheltered from open lake swell. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol on site. Dockhands work 7 days a week, 16 hours a day from 6 am for help with lines.
Practical
Water and 30 or 50 amp shore power on the pontoons. Sewage pump-out at 5 USD. Repair workshop, marine store, diesel and petrol on the fuel berth. Visitor reservations through the Michigan DNR system at midnrreservations.com or 1 800 447 2757.
Ashore
Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in downtown Alpena at 8 km by road, the visitor centre for Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, with free entry and glass-bottom boat tours over the wrecks. Alpena municipal beach to the north.
History
Thunder Bay sits inside the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, 4,300 square miles of Lake Huron protecting close to 100 historic shipwrecks. The stretch was known to nineteenth-century mariners as Shipwreck Alley for its weather and shoals.
