Approach and anchoring
Approach up Lynn Canal from Juneau, around 90 NM north. Strong katabatic winds, locally called Taku winds, blow down the inlet in winter. Cruise ships use the deepwater wharves on the west side; small craft work the inner basin to the east. VHF channel 16, harbourmaster on 295 Congress Way.
Practical
Transient moorage available on a space-available basis at 0.75 dollar per ft per day, for vessels up to 150 ft. 20 amp shore power on all docks, seasonal potable water, seasonal restrooms and showers, pump-out facility and refuse stations at each ramp. No fuel berth in the small boat harbour itself.
Ashore
Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park visitor centre is at the foot of Broadway, 600 m from the harbour. The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow-gauge railway departs from the dock area for the climb up White Pass. Trailheads for the Chilkoot and Dewey Lakes trails start within the town grid.
History
Skagway grew almost overnight in 1898 as the saltwater terminus of the Klondike gold rush, when stampeders landed here to walk the White Pass or the Chilkoot Trail to the Yukon. The White Pass and Yukon Route railway, opened in 1900, replaced the trails and still runs from the harbour.
