Anchorage off Sitka, on the west coast of Baranof Island in Sitka Sound, south-east Alaska.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Sitka faces the open Pacific across Sitka Sound, sheltered by a scatter of islands and the dormant volcano of Mount Edgecumbe to the west. Vessels anchor off Crescent Harbor and tender ashore. Anchor over rock; the bottom calls for a well-set anchor and a check that it has held.
Practical
Rock bottom. The anchorage is sheltered from north-west through south-east and lies open from the south-west. Crescent Harbor and the town harbours offer berths, fuel and provisions for boats that prefer alongside or a buoy.
Ashore
Sitka was the capital of Russian America until 1867, when Alaska was transferred to the United States. Sitka National Historical Park holds Tlingit and Russian sites and a stand of totem poles. St Michael's Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox church, stands in the town centre.
Story
Sitka Sound carries heavy marine wildlife traffic. Sea otters, harbour seals, porpoises and whales are seen regularly in the surrounding waters.
