Approach and anchoring

Reached from the Gulf of Mexico by the buoyed Steinhatchee River channel, which threads a long stretch of shallow water; the Gulf approach is best taken on a rising tide. VHF channel 9.

Practical

Address 322 South Riverside Drive. Wet berths, dry storage, motel rooms, bait and tackle, and a Ships' Store carrying marine parts. The fuel berth supplies 87 and 93 octane petrol and dyed diesel, open 0700 to 1800.

Ashore

Steinhatchee sits at the centre of the Big Bend scallop grounds. The recreational scallop season runs from 15 June to Labor Day, with grounds 2 to 7 miles south and around Big Grassy Island 6 miles north. Mask, fins and snorkel are all the gear needed.
