Salmon Harbor Marina

4.1Winchester Bay, United States
Type
Harbour

Public marina on the Umpqua River at Winchester Bay, just inside the bar, gateway to the Pacific and the Oregon Dunes.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Accessed from the Pacific via the Umpqua River bar between two jetties. The bar can break heavily on the ebb against westerly swell; USCG Station Umpqua River monitors crossings and posts restrictions on VHF 16 and amber bar-flash lights. Once inside, head upriver to Winchester Bay.

Practical

Around 315 berths on wood and concrete pontoons, shore power and fresh water at most berths. Two launch ramps. Fuel berth at the west end ramp with non-ethanol 92 octane petrol. RV dump station ashore. First-come first-served, no reservations. Operated by Douglas County.

Ashore

Salmon Harbor Village shops and restaurants within 300 m. Umpqua Lighthouse State Park 3 km south. Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area trails and the Pacific beach within 2 km west.

History

The Umpqua bar jetties were built in two phases: north side 1923 to 1927, south side completed in 1935, after a 1916 War Department permit aimed at stabilising a shifting entrance that had wrecked many vessels.
