Anchorage at the head of Reid Inlet in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, below the tidewater face of Reid Glacier.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Most boats anchor in the north-west corner near the inlet mouth, where a spit gives shelter from northerly winds in about 20 to 30 feet of water over sand. The cove is enclosed and well protected on most bearings. Glacier Bay is closed to large cruise ships here, so the inlet sees only smaller private vessels and small-ship cruises.
Ashore
Reid Glacier spills down to the water from the Brady Icefield at the western end of the inlet. The beaches and surrounding terrain are open to walkers, and kayakers use the inlet to reach the glacier face.
History
The inlet and glacier are named for Harry Fielding Reid, an American geologist who studied Glacier Bay in 1890 and 1892 and was among the first scientists to describe how glaciers move.
