Michigan DNR state harbour on Lake Huron, 19 miles north of Alpena, in a natural bay rated as the only safe haven between Fort Gratiot and the Straits of Mackinac.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Enter the bay from the east, leaving the wooded peninsula of Presque Isle to port. Floating pontoons give 10 ft on the approach and 8 ft alongside. The harbour monitors VHF 9 for check-in. Diesel and petrol available, the last fuel berth before Mackinaw City.

Practical

120 berths in total, 84 of them for visitors, taking boats up to 130 ft. Water, 30 and 50 amp shore power, showers, laundry, pump-out, fishing pier and the Portage restaurant on site. Reservations via midnrreservations.com or 1 800 447 2757. Clean Marina certified. Open mid-May to late October, daily 7 am to 9 pm in season.

Ashore

Old Presque Isle Lighthouse from 1840 at 1.5 km, one of the oldest surviving lights on the Great Lakes. New Presque Isle Lighthouse from 1870 at 2.5 km, the tallest publicly accessible tower on the Great Lakes at 113 ft. Wooded peninsula trails around both lights.

History

The bay was identified in the 1830s as the only safe haven on the 240 mile run between Fort Gratiot and the Straits of Mackinac. Jeremiah Moors of Detroit built the first stone lighthouse here in 1840. The taller coastal tower a mile north replaced it in 1871 and is one of the nine Poe Lights on the Great Lakes.
